Excerpts from Dockwalk Feb. Issue
When should stews clean in-house and when should the professionals be brought in? The experts spill their secrets.
Richard Perkin's long term relationship with stewardesses is common for the master cleaner/restorer. For more than 30 years, he's been caring for some of the industry's most prestigious yachts. With offices in Europe and Fort Lauderdale, Perkins and his team are always on email, ready to answer questions from crew with a stain problem.
Some materials are very reactive to chemicals. Richard discusses individual fabrics with each client. Less tends to be more when it comes to carpets. "The last thing you want to do is screw up a spot cleaning a rug that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars," says Perkins. "If there isn't yardage in storage, you can't repair it."
The worst offender Perkins sees is viscose, often referred to as artificial, bananna, or bamboo silk. It looks like silk, feels like silk, but isn't as durable as the real thing. You can't clean it- it will turn brown. If it gets wet, it's destroyed. For that reason, "All the boats hate it," says Perkins; however, professional stain guard treatments do help prevent soiling. Slightly better is silk. Perkins usually dry-cleans it, a gentler method that's nor as healthy as wet cleaning. Water is safe to use on most silk carpets, but it can make the tips of the fiber flower.
If there's a spot, there are numerous treatments for silk fabrics; however, there is no all-encompassing solution. It's all related to the pH scale. Stains must be removed by the pH that went in- so it helps to know the cause of the stain. Wine Away works and there are kits with multiple specific stain removers, as well. For heavily trafficked boats, Perkins suggests buying a $600 to $700 spot cleaning machine, but, he adds, make sure you follow the dilution instructions.
"Wool is the best without a doubt," says Richard. It has a bend factor of 18,000, which indicates the strength of the fiber. Silk has 8,000 and viscos has 60 or 70. Anything that can be used on silk is fine for wool.
Perkins sells low pH spot cleaners for wool carpets, but he also says Woolite works wonders. The key is to blot (not rub) and soak up all the water. A heavy book on top of a dry rag does the trick. Same goes for silk. For all carpets, he suggests a fabric protector to buy yourself extra time before a liquid settles in. If liquid is spilled it forms beads that are easy to soak up with a cloth.
Carpets should be cleaned annually or biannually. And Perkins warns against the danger of those clear plastic protectors with sticky bottoms. The glue transfers to the fibers, he says. "Three weeks later you'll see black splotches where the glue transferred and is bonding dirt to it." The best protectors: sunbrella runners.
Silk furniture, drapes or shades tend to need less maintenance. Water stains will usually go away, but you need to use acid to get them out. The biggest issue is dust, especially at the top one foot of the drape- that's where 80 percent of the dirt settles- so they have to be vacuumed with a soft attachment weekly.
Perkins says the vacuum is the best tool for cleaning most soft goods. Animal skins should be cleaned annually by a suede or leather professional. In between, they should be vacuumed in the direction the hair lies. The same goes for basic leather cleaning. Perkins suggests talking to a specialist or referring to an owner's manual for maintenance directions, but vacuuming is the best way to pull the dust of delicate hides like Nubuck, which is so fine, it can be penetrated from the oil of your hand. (Hint: wear gloves.)
